Not because familiar categories are necessarily wrong, but because a label can hide the observations and dependencies that gave it meaning.
The operation
We temporarily withheld explanatory privilege from an inherited category while preserving the observations, measurements, constraints, and native relationships beneath it. Then we reconstructed what the evidence required.

We erased time, energy, matter, and gravity.
The equations did not disappear. The rounds did not derive new physics. What survived was narrower: successful mathematics does not always force the inherited nouns used to narrate it.

We tested tangible and intangible.
Material scars, encoded rules, contracts, stored bits, and learned associations can all alter future possibilities through present carriers. The better question became: what structure carries the consequence now?

We tested biotic and abiotic.
The descriptive difference remains useful. The causal question moved toward self-maintenance, restoration, closure, adaptation, and recoverable viable routes.

Life became a question of closure.
When does an arrangement help maintain the conditions required for its own continuation? The organism may follow a closure of dependencies rather than a fixed inventory of matter.

Death became a question of recoverability.
Low activity can coexist with recoverable organization. The operational hypothesis asks whether any declared route returns the system to viable self-maintenance.

Memory became retained consequence.
A history matters when its durable present effect changes later response. The past does not haunt the present. The past changes the present.

Intelligence became the management of reachable futures.
A crack carries history but does not model alternatives. The candidate ladder reaches intelligence only when a system constructs, compares, selects, enacts, and revises possible futures.

Language became compressed formation.
A word does not contain all its meaning. It can cue structure already formed in a receiver. This raised the question of whether machines need to communicate by serial prose at all.

Influence is not truth. Popularity is not truth. Rejection is not erasure. Knowledge needs provenance richer than citation counts.

Science acquired an Address.
A problem inherits definitions, assumptions, variables, methods, and evaluation rules before anyone begins solving it. Inspect those dependencies first.

If history changes future reachability, artificial cognition should not repeatedly begin from an almost-historyless context.

The Formation Ledger preserves audit and transfer. The Formative Field asks whether indexed susceptibilities can make formation executable without searching everything retained.

Machines acquired physical self-witness.
Thermal history, wear, impedance drift, energy state, and fault propagation can become formed evidence about the machine itself.

A machine's usable body may vary with capability, energy, authority, local formation, and connectivity. This is a candidate engineering index, not a claim of one identity across bodies.
