Calling something living identifies a useful class, but does not by itself specify which organizational operations produce the transition.

A living organization may be understood as one whose ongoing processes help maintain or reconstruct the conditions required for those processes to continue.
Candidate reconstruction
This is a candidate operational framework, not settled biology. It must be connected to independently measurable variables and compared against existing theories of living organization.
The organism boundary
The organism may be the closure, not the components.
Atoms are continually replaced. What persists is an organization of mutually maintaining processes and constraints. The open question is whether an organism's boundary should follow its skin or the closure of dependencies required to maintain it.

An autonomy handoff occurs when responsibility for maintaining a required constraint shifts from an external source toward the organization itself. It can be partial and multidimensional.
Origin and death on one map
The organization reconstructs conditions that keep viable routes open.
Reachability narrows, but recovery routes remain.
Activity approaches zero while recoverable organization remains.
No declared route returns the organization to viable self-maintenance.
"No route" is relative to stated resources, interventions, horizon, and model. This is an operational hypothesis, not a universal mathematical solution to death.
What would kill it
The closure must add discriminating power.
The proposal weakens if closure variables cannot be measured, fail to distinguish matched living and nonliving systems, or add no prediction or intervention advantage beyond existing biological accounts.
